Mental Health Recovery Teams

Provision of core services to adults of working age with severe and enduring mental health problems.

Referral Criteria

The Assessment to Intervention (A2i) Team is the entry point to mental health services.  All referrals are first sent to the A2i team who will decide whether to refer a patient to another service.  Non-urgent referrals will be assessed within 10 days.  Urgent referrals will be dealt with on the day.

The service is for people with the following conditions which cannot be managed within primary care:

  • mental illness which requires diagnosis, or the medical opinion of a psychiatrist
  • severe psychotic disorders
  • severe depression
  • severe emotional difficulties that could lead to harmful behaviour
  • severe personality disorders
  • severe types of obsessive/compulsive disorder, phobia or anxiety spectrum disorders
  • patients with a gender identity disorder who require a mental health assessment prior to referral to a gender identity clinic
  • severe mental illness together with substance misuse, a disability and/ or developmental disorder

Referrals are accepted from qualified professionals, including GPs, Accident and Emergency, and the Police. 

Referrals must include as much relevant information as possible about a person's current and previous mental health history.  Please contact the A2i Team.

Full service description

The Trust's Mental Health Recovery Teams in Portsmouth provide high quality care to adults of working age with severe and /or enduring mental health needs.  These teams are:

  • Assessment to Intervention (A2i)
  • Mental Health Recovery Team (MHRT)
  • Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP)

The Mental Health Recovery Teams offer further assessment, treatment, care planning and a range of individually tailored interventions and evaluation, in line with the Care Programme Approach. 

These teams work in partnership with GPs, service users, their informal and paid carers, third sector organisations and any other services that provide assistance to the service user.
